How do wires magically tangle themselves!?

I place perfectly loose, untangled wires and cords by my bed, return a few hours later, and they are wickedly tangled. We are talking KNOTS. How is this happening? Are there evil gnomes living in my closet? Please explain this bizarre phenomenon.
